Locally led solutions

A wither wound is a nasty sore caused by rubbing of poorly made harnessing equipment.

When I was in Mali I saw one donkey that wore a scratchy jute-type wither pad under his harness.  Dr Amadou, SPANA’s Mali director, removed this and rubbed it on the driver’s arm to make a point. He then treated the wound and replaced the pad with a soft cloth one with a hole in it to take pressure off the wound.  His old pad was then ceremoniously burned!  SPANA has recruited some local women to make soft pads, stuffed with scraps of soft material they recycle from the rubbish dumps.  Our goal to make this a sustainable, locally-led solution to these common wounds.
