Donkey Tales: Animal welfare in Marrakech, part one

SPANA’s veterinary clinic in Marrakech is the charity’s biggest and busiest. Around 1,500 donkeys, mules and horses are brought to the clinic each month for treatment. Our staff there see working animals with all sorts of injuries, and over the next few weeks we’ll be telling you about some of the latest admissions.

Sakina:

Last week the SPANA Marrakech team were presented with a very sad looking donkey called Sakina,

She had badly burnt the back of her legs on the oven, and her owner was so concerned for her that he walked for ten miles to bring her to the clinic for treatment.  Sakina was injured when she stumbled back into a bread oven at a busy souk.

The vets examined Sakina and found that the burns had caused lots of swelling on her legs and lameness.  They administered pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs, and then cleaned the wounds.

Within hours Sakina’s suffering was relieved and she is now staying at the clinic for a few weeks to allow time for her wounds to fully heal.

She has been stabled with another donkey called Duha who’s recovering from a hoof injury, and our Marrakech staff say they have become the best of friends.
