Stablemate 2012 is packed full of news and stories about working animals from the last 12 months that we’d like to share with you. Thanks to your support, last year we helped nearly 400,000 working animals.
As well as reflecting on 2011 we also need to look ahead; we know there are plenty more challenges to face and many more animals to help. On page four, for instance, you can read about one of the most common problems our centres and mobile clinics will have to deal with this year – lameness.
Back on their feet
Sadly, equines suffering from the effects of poor farriery are a common sight for SPANA teams around the world. Severely overgrown hooves, unsuitable shoes made of thin pieces of rubber and shoes fixed on with masonry nails that penetrate into the sensitive areas of the hoof, are all results of poor farriery and can lead to lameness. With the help of supporters like you SPANA is working to ease suffering and prevent lameness for thousands of working animals each year. We’ve set up farrier training courses and we’re running workshops for animal owners to learn about farriery and how to spot if their animal is suffering from poor shoes or an injury.
Your support means a better life for animals such as Amina
You may remember Amina from our Christmas campaign. We’re delighted to be able to tell you that Amina made a full recovery. We recently visited Amina at her home where we took this short video clip. The white horse is her mother, being led by SPANA vet Dr Hinnach, and the man leading Amina is her owner, Bouishak.
Here she is at her new home.
