Helping working animals in Kenya

Project name: University of Nairobi

Project type: Veterinary

Location: Nairobi

SPANA is working with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in the University of Nairobi to carry out research into welfare issues facing working oxen in Embu county, Kenya.

The use of draught oxen in farming and transport exposes them to severe welfare issues and health problems. This project aims to evaluate and document welfare issues affecting draught oxen, assess farmers’ knowledge and attitudes towards oxen welfare, educate draught oxen owners on good animal welfare practices and provide animal health services to the oxen in the region.
