SPANA’s ambassadors and celebrity supporters call on global leaders to prioritise access to water for working animals

Dear World Leaders,

This International Working Animal Day (15 June), as many countries at the sharp end of the climate crisis are experiencing more frequent droughts and water scarcity, we are calling on you, global leaders, to prioritise access to water for working animals such as horses, donkeys, mules, camels, and oxen.

Millions of people across the globe rely on working animals for farming, transportation and everyday survival, particularly in areas most affected by poverty and the climate crisis.

Working animals are the unsung heroes of the water crisis, especially in low-income countries. In regions with poor water infrastructure, they provide a lifeline by helping people transport water from standpipes and wells to their communities. These animals often work extremely long days, carrying unbearably heavy loads across difficult terrain.

It is working animals that help communities survive, carrying clean water long distances in times of drought, yet, their essential contribution is too often overlooked and tragically they are often the last to receive the little water that is available.

That’s why we are joining animal charity SPANA in its call to you, governments around the world, to prioritise inclusive water services that meet the needs of all animals and the people who depend on them, to ensure fair and reliable access for all.

Yours faithfully
