SPANA is supporting the Maun Animal Welfare Society (MAWS), a charity which improves the lives of domestic animals by providing free veterinary care in northern Botswana.

Donkey with ear tags

We have previously funded a project where locally recruited staff will attach reflectors to the ears of 500 donkeys in the Maun area of northern Botswana so that they can be seen by motorists at night. In this area road traffic accidents are responsible for numerous deaths and serious injuries amongst livestock and donkeys, and also cause considerable harm to passengers and vehicles. Because livestock are allowed to roam freely day and night they are at risk on fast and dangerous roads, but they need to be there to access the sparse amount of grazing available to them.

Our current Botswana outreach project is also run with the Maun Animal Welfare Society (MAWS) to provide veterinary care to animals in need.
