During a period of harsh drought, Lesedi was brought to our mobile clinic in rural Maun, Botswana, suffering from dehydration and malnutrition. Lesedi’s owner, a cattle herder, was concerned because he had noticed that his trusted horse was not drinking and was rapidly losing weight. The SPANA team carefully examined Lesedi and found the horse was suffering from internal parasites. This is a very common condition seen by our vets, especially when there is sparse pasture during the dry season. While grazing, animals can ingest parasitic worms, which then live in the intestines, depriving the animal of vital nutrients until they become too weak to carry on. Our team administered an anti-parasite treatment to kill the infestation, and instructed Lesedi’s owner to feed her wetted grass to help her re-hydrate. Thanks to your support, our mobile clinics reach tens of thousands of animals like Lesedi in remote communities every year.
