Arjun’s medical reboot

When a mighty camel lost his strength, expert assistance rushed to his side.

Vet next to the mobile clinic

Every morning, as he has done for the past 10 years, Rameshwar brings his 15-year-old camel to the chaotic grain market on the outskirts of Jaipur in western India.

Rameshwar noticed that Arjun was eating less and less of his food, becoming uncharacteristically weak. He tried changing the type and amount of food he gave Arjun, but the camel grew thinner every day.

The elderly owner knew vets from SPANA frequently come to the grain market to give expert treatments to camels in need. He called to check with Dr Swami, who confirmed his team was coming that same afternoon.

The vets instantly got to work examining Arjun and, before long, they had concluded that his loss of appetite was most likely due to intestinal worms. They administered deworming treatments to eliminate the parasites, and gave Rameshwar some digestive powder to help Arjun process his food.

Rameshwar was incredibly relieved. The stress of watching his beloved camel deteriorate had been heartbreaking for him. His income from transporting grain supports his wife, two daughters and ageing parents, so the loss of Arjun would have been serious.

He explained: ‘If our camels have wounds, the vets apply the dressing and give us ointment. It’s very beneficial for keeping our camels healthy and strong.

Throughout the world, SPANA works tirelessly to support working animals like Arjun and the communities that depend on them.

We couldn’t do it without kind supporters like you. Thank you for your ongoing gift to SPANA.
