Working dogs in Malawi are used for security patrolling at homes and businesses, as well as for scent detection of narcotics, ammunition, or the illegal wildlife trade at airports and land borders. Security companies in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital, use over 300 dogs for these purposes.
Sadly, these dogs are suffering from injuries often caused by sharp materials within their living conditions. Starving and severely dehydrated, many are confined to small, cramped, dark kennels for prolonged periods of time without any enrichment or mental stimulation – then must work for up to 12 hours a day.
When they are not working, they can stay crammed in their tiny kennels all day and night, or chained to trees with no protection from the burning sun or heavy rain.
Infectious diseases are also running rampant, with many dogs suffering from rabies – which is highly contagious and fatal.
After long days patrolling in the gruelling heat without access to water and little rest – then confined to one spot without adequate nutrition – their survival hangs in the balance.
Please donate today to help provide essential veterinary treatment, nutritious feed, and comfortable shelter for these hardworking canines.
