Your support could help us build water troughs like this one that draw clean water from deep underground.

This World Water Day, working animals around the world are suffering due to ongoing drought. Will you donate today and help more working animals facing crisis?

A devastating drought has triggered a national state of disaster in Malawi. Throughout the season, rain has been intermittent leaving animals without water for long periods.

These donkeys are crucial to daily life. Without them, families can’t fetch water, collect firewood or take their crops to market. When a donkey can’t work, the whole household falls apart.

Sadly, the welfare of working animals is often overlooked during emergencies, with many left injured or abandoned and struggling to survive.

Our teams have already helped provide:

  • 300 starving animals with emergency feed.
  • 4 water troughs that deliver clean, safe water.
  • 150 community members with advise on how to care for their animals during an emergency.

Will you please donate today to help save working animals from starvation, dehydration and suffering? Thank you so much.

When Khuda arrived at the mobile clinic, the team rated his body condition a two out of five - dangerously thin

How SPANA helped Khuda

The drought was slowly killing Khuda. The gentle donkey grew weaker each day, struggling to pull his cart as his owner Chimutu watched helplessly. Patches of Khuda’s hair fell out and he could barely walk.

Worried, Chimutu stopped working him, but with just two government vets covering the entire area, he had nowhere to turn. When Chimutu heard that our partner, LSPCA’s mobile clinic was nearby, he rushed Khuda there for help.

Our vets found Khuda was severely dehydrated and malnourished. He was also battling infected wounds and a parasitic infection that had been draining his strength.

The team got to work immediately. They prescribed antiparasitic medication to tackle the infection, applied treatment to his wounds, and provided good quality feed. This was the first proper nutrition Khuda had received in weeks.

Chimutu was shown how to care for Khuda at home while he recovered and given guidance on managing his donkey through the ongoing drought. The team will return to check on Khuda’s progress and make sure he’s healing. With almost no veterinary support in the area, this ongoing care is crucial.

By providing emergency treatment and feed, Khuda was given a chance to survive. He was one of the lucky ones.

Working animals are suffering from extreme weather. Will you please donate today to help more working animals like Khuda around the world who desperately need our help? Thank you.
