In the face of extreme poverty, the world’s most vulnerable animals must struggle on, overworked and starving as never before.

This is why SPANA’s vital work is more important than ever. Without the emergency feed, treatment and care our dedicated vets have provided for 100 years, the world’s hardest working animals would have nowhere to turn.

Just $5.00 could feed a starving animal for two days.

Every animal we care for, every owner we train, every life we save… every single action we take to make the world a better place for working animals depends on donations from caring people like you.

We receive no government funding, and desperately need your support to reach animals at their lowest ebb.

Please support SPANA today.

Before taking her to a SPANA mobile clinic, Thoko’s owner worried she wouldn’t survive the malnutrition.

Thoko’s story

Thoko is a 14-year-old donkey who has spent her life working tirelessly in the harsh conditions of Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe. Each day, she carried heavy loads to help her owner, Simon, support their family. But when the worst drought in decades struck, even the strongest animals began to falter.

After years of hard labour, Thoko’s strength gave out. She collapsed, too weak to stand, her body worn down by exhaustion and hunger. Fearing for her life, Simon brought her to a SPANA mobile clinic, hoping for a miracle.

The team diagnosed Thoko with severe malnutrition and internal parasites, conditions that had slowly drained her energy. Immediate treatment began. She was given fluids, nutritional support, and parasite control. Her recovery took time, but with the care of SPANA’s dedicated vets, Thoko’s condition began to improve.

Thanks to this urgent intervention, Thoko gradually regained her strength. With careful attention and follow-up support for Simon, she was able to return home and continue her life, no longer in pain, and with her health restored.

Thoko’s story is one of hope—but she is not alone. Thousands of animals across the world suffer in silence, facing malnutrition, exhaustion, and preventable illness.

Your support means that working animals like Thoko can get the treatment they desperately need when they need it most.
