Help save donkeys caught in dangerous floodwaters.
Right now, floods have devastated the lives of over 1,000 donkeys at Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, enduring conditions no animal should have to face.
The ground is completely waterlogged, trapping the donkeys in deep, filthy water with nowhere to rest. Standing in these conditions all day is causing painful lesions, infections are setting in, and deadly diseases are spreading quickly. Many donkeys are now too weak to carry on.
Our local partners, Disability Relief Services Tanzania, are on the ground responding to this crisis, but with heavy rains expected to continue throughout March, the donkeys need our help.
While much of the focus is on providing for the people here, we’re stepping in to make sure these hardworking animals aren’t forgotten.
With your support we aim to:
- Vaccinate over 600 donkeys against deadly diseases.
- Provide food and clean water to keep them strong.
- Provide urgent treatment to more than 400 donkeys for injuries and illness.
- Build safe, dry shelters for over 1,000 donkeys to rest at night.
But with more extreme weather on the way, even more donkeys will need urgent help.
Will you donate today to get lifesaving care to the donkeys who need it most?
Msambilo’s Story
Msambilo, a 13-year-old donkey, is a hardworking animal living in the camp. He plays a crucial role in helping his owner, Bundala, provide for his family. Bundala relies on Msambilo to transport water, food, and firewood, vital resources that help his family survive each day.
But the recent flash floods have made everything harder. The floods destroyed roads, leaving the paths muddy and treacherous. Msambilo, who already worked long hours carrying heavy loads, became sick with foot rot and developed painful saddle sores from poorly fitting harnesses. These injuries kept him from working, threatening Bundala’s ability to support his wife and children.
Bundala shares, ‘My donkey is everything to my family. He helps me carry water from the borehole, fetch firewood from the forest, and transport food from the market. Without him, I wouldn’t be able to earn a living. This donkey is not just an animal; he is my partner in survival.’
Thanks to support from DRST and SPANA, Msambilo is now receiving vital treatment. He has received care for foot rot and antibiotics for his respiratory infection, as well as relief from the painful saddle sores.’
Many donkeys like him still need your help to heal and continue their vital work.
