When Triny was injured in an accident on the road, SPANA vets in Ethiopia were on hand to provide the urgent treatment he needed.

Triny is a 10-year-old carthorse from Bishoftu, a town in central Ethiopia. Every day, Triny works hard offering a taxi service so that his passengers can get to market, school and hospital. This helps Triny’s owner, Wondu, support his wife and child.

One morning, while travelling along an uneven and potholed road, Triny lost his balance and fell heavily on his front knees. Triny stood up quickly, but Wondu was dismayed to see that his horse’s legs were scraped and bleeding. So, he took him straight to SPANA’s veterinary centre in Bishoftu.

At the centre, SPANA’s veterinary team examined Triny’s wounds. They first gave him pain relief because both wounds looked extremely sore. Each wound was then cleaned thoroughly with water and antiseptic and dressed with a protective bandage. Triny was admitted to SPANA’s stable so that the vets could check on his progress, administer further treatment, change his bandages regularly and ensure that his wounds remained clean and dry.

When Triny was ready to go home, our vets gave Wondu lots of support and advice on how to identify risks that could result in accidents. This included avoiding overloading his cart, not travelling too fast, awareness of uneven roads, and ensuring his horse received plenty of rest and a good diet so that he was strong and healthy to work.

Wondu was very grateful for Triny’s treatment. He said: ‘Thank you, SPANA, for your excellent services. My family and I rely on the income generated from my business.’

Every year, our vets treat many working animals who have suffered an accident on the road. Thanks to your kindness and compassion, our vet teams are ready to provide the emergency treatment and attentive aftercare that injured working animals desperately need. Thank you so much for caring for working animals.
