Description

SPANA vets in Chemaia, Morocco, received an emergency call about a donkey in Safi, 70km away. The team rushed to the scene and found the female donkey wounded and trapped knee deep in mud. Once the team set her free, they could see she was seriously lame. The vets suspected she was injured in a road accident and unfortunately abandoned by her previous owner. The donkey was admitted to the centre’s stables, where X-rays revealed a closed fracture. The team cleaned the mud from her coat and provided pain relief before stabilising the fracture and casting her leg. During her stay, the cast was replaced regularly, and the donkey received expert aftercare. After 10 weeks of careful monitoring, X-rays showed her fracture had healed. The donkey – affectionately named ‘Hajar’ – will remain at the centre until she fully recovers, and a new owner is found. Thanks to the quick action of our vets, she has been given a second chance.
