Amina the donkey’s excruciating hobble wound

Amina the donkey visited SPANA’s mobile clinic in Tunisia to receive essential treatment for a painful hobble wound.

Amina the donkey supports her 72-year-old owner, Mahbouba, with vital domestic tasks in their mountain village near the city of Kasserine, in Tunisia. Without Amina, Mahbouba would be unable to collect water and firewood or travel to market for food supplies.

Mahbouba brought Amina to SPANA’s mobile clinic when she noticed a small wound on her donkey’s right front leg. SPANA’s veterinary team in Tunisia makes regular visits to rural villages like Amina’s to improve the welfare of the working animals who live there.

SPANA’s vets examined Amina’s leg and diagnosed a painful wound caused by a hobble. Some owners choose to use hobbles – rope or strapping secured to an animal’s leg – to prevent their animals from straying too far if they are left unattended. The vets cleaned and disinfected Amina’s wound, then applied some soothing ointment and a soft bandage. They told Mahbouba to keep the bandage clean and dry until the following day. She should then remove the bandage and apply ointment daily until Amina’s wound had healed.

Our vets also explained to Mahbouba about proper harnessing and other work equipment, and gave her advice on how to keep Amina safe without using a hobble.

Mahbouba was delighted with the treatment SPANA gave Amina. She said: ‘If SPANA’s mobile clinic didn’t come here, I wouldn’t be able to get help for my donkey. Thank you, SPANA, for coming to my village.’
