Description
This gift can help us restock our clinics with essential medication and relieve working animals like Yu-Yu from pain and suffering.
In Myanmar, a 27-year-old logging elephant named Yu-Yu was struggling due to a painful abscess on her shoulder. Her handler (or ‘oozie’), Zaw-Myu, recognised the signs of distress and sought help from the SPANA vet team. Yu-Yu was first sedated by the team to allow the vets to examine and treat her without her feeling pain or stress before lancing the abscess. They then used iodine to disinfect the wound and to flush the abscess.
During the procedure, the team noticed Yu-Yu had an abnormally curved toenail which was causing her distress and posed a risk of becoming ingrown and infected. The vets trimmed it back to ease any discomfort and prevent future issues. After treating the abscess and providing anti-inflammatory pain relief, medication and a vitamin injection, Yu-Yu was on the path to a full recovery.
‘Yu-Yu is integral to my job and is special to me, so I’m very grateful for SPANA’s help.’– Zaw-Myu
