Description
When disaster strikes, working animals are often on the front line, facing extreme weather, natural disasters, economic crises, war or other conflicts. Our teams are dedicated to providing lifesaving care in these emergencies.
In Turkana, Kenya’s second largest county, living conditions are harsh. The arid landscape, frequent droughts, and water insecurity make life difficult for working animals and their owners. Ongoing drought in the region has significantly impacted access to water, causing serious deterioration of health in camels and donkeys. Animals drinking from scarce puddles of contaminated stagnant water can lead to parasite infections, draining them of vital nutrients and causing fatigue, malnutrition, and potentially fatal health issues.
Working alongside our local partner, Utunzi Animal Welfare, the teams on the ground are providing expert treatment, distributing feed and providing access to clean water to animals in need. Beyond emergency response, SPANA is investing in long-term solutions like maintaining boreholes and supporting the training of water committees, empowering communities to take ownership of water points, their repair and maintenance. By supporting disaster preparedness projects, we work to reduce suffering and protect working animals from the increasing dangers they face.
