Supporting Alsuhail the mule’s recovery at our stables in Morocco

Our team in Morocco helped treat Alsuhail the mule for parasitesHe stayed at our stables until he fully recovered.

Alsuhail, meaning ‘glorious’, is a 12-year-old mule from a small village near Chemaia, in western Morocco. He helps his owner, Fateh, earn a living to support his family by transporting eggs and other goods.

Fateh noticed that Alsuhail had some sores around his eyes and right hind leg, so brought him to our Chemaia centre for help. At our centre, Dr Carmel examined Alsuhail and diagnosed him with summer sores, a parasitic infection caused by flies. Dr Carmel also found an overgrowth of tissue on a wound that was not healing well on Alsuhail’s upper hind leg. He decided to surgically remove this excess tissue to aid recovery.

Alsuhail was admitted to our stables for two weeks to heal. During his stay, we administered anti-inflammatory pain relief and antiparasite medication. We also checked and rebandaged his wounds daily. When Alsuhail was ready to go home, Dr Carmel advised Fateh on how to avoid summer sores, including fitting a fly fringe, where the tassels stop flies from landing on the skin.

Fateh said: “May God bless all the people who are in charge of this centre. If SPANA wasn’t here, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

alsuhail and his owner

It’s thanks to your ongoing support that our teams can help working animals like Alsuhail whenever they need us. Your kindness enables us to provide essential veterinary care to working animals diagnosed with parasites, help owners develop their animal care skills and recognise the symptoms of parasites by hosting community training sessions and workshops.

Very soon we’ll be introducing some exciting changes, which will enable us to expand our work – but our mission to drive lasting change remains the same. With your regular support, we can continue to help transform the lives of working animals like Alsuhail.
