Helping working animals in South Africa

Project name: Highveld Horse Care Unit

Project type: Veterinary

Location: Townships around Johannesburg

HHCU became a SPANA partner in 2017. The charity employs and trains vets, technicians, animal carers and farriers, using mobile clinics to get veterinary care to townships in Mafikeng, Limpopo and Taung.

A total of 1,652 veterinary treatments were given to working animals last year.

Project name: Coastal Horse Care Unit (CHCU)

Project type: Education

Location:  Cato Ridge

In the rural communities of KwaZulu Natal, outside Durban, horses are widely used by young people for transport and to support work.

Children between the ages of 12 and 16 learn to improve their animal husbandry skills at two special five-day educational holiday camps.

The camps allow trainers to teach horse care, behaviour and management using fun and creative methods, promoting knowledge and skills while boosting self-esteem and confidence.
