A horse receives treatment for a broken leg after being hit by a vehicle.
Working animals are at risk of being seriously injured or killed in deadly road traffic accidents. This horse received treatment by SPANA vets for a broken leg.

Most animals involved in traffic accidents don’t survive. Will you help prevent life-altering injuries and save lives?

It’s upsetting to know that, every day, thousands of working animals are at risk from traffic accidents. Some are accidentally struck while desperately roaming for food in drought-stricken areas. Others pull loaded carts along busy roads, putting their lives on the line, especially at dark.

But you can help them.

By donating today, you can save the lives of animals at risk of, or injured from, road traffic accidents. Your support can:

  • Provide thousands of working animals worldwide with low-cost reflective collars, making it easier for motorists to detect them in the dark when they are on or near busy roads.
  • Deliver lifesaving treatment and vital medicines to working animals who are tragically hit by vehicles and need urgent assistance.
  • Offer training to owners to help them better manage their animals on roads and highways, including harnessing training and guidance on load carrying.

None of this would be possible without your generous support.

Please donate today and stop more working animals from dying in needless road traffic accidents. Your gift could save many lives.

Champion the donkey was hit by a truck while carrying goods in Zimbabwe. He received vital treatment from SPANA vets.
Champion was knocked to the ground and suffered a fractured leg after being hit by a car.

Champion’s story

Champion the donkey works every day under the hot sun carrying carts of water and firewood for his village in Zimbabwe.

He carries his heavy load next to a major highway that connects two of Zimbabwe’s provinces.

Speeding trucks have little time to stop if they’re too late to spot working animals along the roadside. Unbalanced carts can also topple over, spilling goods onto the road and leaving helpless animals exposed to traffic.

Tragedy struck early one morning when Champion was hit by a haulage truck while he and three other donkeys were pulling a cart next to the highway.

Unfortunately for Champion, he was on the side of the cart nearest the road. On impact with the truck, he was knocked to the ground where he lay in agony as the truck sped away. Concerned passers-by helped Champion’s owner, Silas, lift his traumatised and injured donkey onto the cart so he could get him home and contact SPANA for help.

When the SPANA veterinary team arrived, they examined Champion and diagnosed a hairline fracture in his hind leg. This is an extremely serious condition and without treatment Champion’s leg could have broken completely, causing life-threatening complications.

To ease his suffering, the vets sedated Champion before securing his leg with a cast. They also gave him medication to manage the pain. Silas was advised to restrict Champion’s movement until he was completely recovered and to give him adequate feed and water to help rebuild his strength.

Thanks to ongoing care and regular visits from SPANA’s vets to change his cast and monitor his healing, Champion survived and will recover from his injuries.

Your donation could help save more injured working animals, like Champion, who are struck down on busy roads by passing vehicles. Will you please give today? Thank you so much.
