For hungry and exhausted animals, especially those weakened by drought or injury, even a mild respiratory infection can quickly become life threatening.
Working animals face a constant struggle with debilitating respiratory illnesses. In regions with extreme weather conditions, polluted cities and in places where working animals haul heavy loads through clouds of dust and debris, their lungs are constantly irritated.
Prolonged exposure to dirt and pollution can lead to inflammation, making them prone to coughs and breathing difficulties.
Much of this suffering could be avoided. With treatment, essential medicines and vaccines to prevent certain conditions, respiratory diseases can be controlled and the lives of working animals can be saved.
Your support could help SPANA and our partners stop these respiratory illnesses in their tracks and protect working animals from needless pain and distress.
Will you protect working animals from deadly lung diseases by providing antibiotics and vaccines they urgently need?
Saving Guarati from infection
Gurati, a six-year-old donkey from Batu, Ethiopia, helps his owner, Beriso, carry timber, sand and cement to areas inaccessible by car.
One day he noticed that his little donkey was struggling to breathe. At first, Beriso thought Gurati was just tired after another gruelling day, but then he noticed thick discharge streaming from his nose.
The air in Batu is thick with dust and fumes from traffic and building work and had further irritated his lungs. Weighed down by heavy loads, Gurati struggled to breathe and had a rasping cough.
Worried, Beriso brought Gurati to our local partner’s mobile clinic, where vets diagnosed a serious respiratory infection. He was given antibiotics and medicine to reduce inflammation. Beriso was advised to let him rest until he fully recovered.
Beriso was so relieved. Beyond being his only way to make a living, Gurati is a loyal friend and constant companion. The thought of losing him had filled Beriso with worry.
Over several weeks Gurati recovered, but countless other working animals don’t get the help they need. Without proper care, they grow weak and fall ill. These illnesses can easily spread and some animals are even abandoned when their owners can’t cope.
With the right treatment and vaccines, we can prevent these illnesses and save lives. Your gift can give vets the medicines they need to safeguard animals like Gurati and many others like him.
Every working animal deserves to breathe easily – will you help them today?
