A year has passed since a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco. The impact of the earthquake was devastating – claiming the lives of thousands of people and animals, and affecting millions.
The remote villages in the High Atlas Mountains suffered the most. Emergency services faced difficulties in reaching animals and people in need, as rescue efforts were complicated by the risk of landslides and the long distances involved.
Just a few days after the earthquake struck, our Marrakech veterinary team headed to the epicentre to provide lifesaving veterinary treatment to injured, ill and displaced working animals. During this immediate aftermath, we visited over 30 villages and treated 412 animals in dire need, and cared for hundreds more over the following weeks and months.
But our vital work is still desperately needed.
With villages obliterated by the earthquake and isolated mountain roads destroyed, working donkeys and mules have been critical in bringing vital water, food and supplies to cut-off communities. These invisible workers urgently need your help. You can ensure animals helping with the recovery efforts receive the critical treatment, feed and water they need as they work so hard to help their communities rebuild their lives.
With so many livelihoods lost, communities are have also been left without income to feed their animals. Sadly, many working animals will starve, become malnourished or be abandoned. We cannot let this happen.
Will you please help Morocco’s working animals by donating today? Thank you so much.
Morocco was one of the first countries SPANA started working in, following our foundation over 100 years ago in 1923. Today, Morocco is home to our largest global programme and we remain committed to supporting the country’s working animals.
It will take a long time for the hardest-hit communities in Morocco to fully recover from such a devastating event. But with your support, we’ll continue to be there so that working animals receive the food, water and veterinary treatment they so desperately need.
Your continued kind generosity will ensure working animals affected by the earthquake will not suffer. Will you please donate today to continue to help them? Thank you so much.
Your generous donations will be used for projects such as those featured in this appeal and where they are required the most to help animals in need. We would be so grateful for whatever you can give to this vital earthquake appeal. Thank you.
