Sadly, lameness is one of the most common conditions seen by SPANA veterinary teams, affecting thousands of working animals every year. Routine farriery helps prevent overgrown hooves that can often cause lameness as well as ligament and tendon issues if left untreated. In the countries where we work, such as Tunisia and Ethiopia, we’re training local farriers, providing them with the expert knowledge, essential skills, and appropriate equipment needed to prevent permanent hoof problems.

In Aïn Draham, Tunisia, Lyna the donkey was struggling to walk due to uncomfortable, overgrown hooves. SPANA’s skilled local farrier trimmed the overgrowth with special farriery tools until her hooves were well-balanced and in a good condition.
