A family check-up

Lotfi took his horse Buna, and her foal Fata, to a mobile SPANA vet clinic for a family check-up to check their health.

Near Boussalem in an arid region of central Tunisia, Lotfi knew that the SPANA clinic was coming to his small village.

Lotfi and his 10-year-old daughter Maram got to the location long before the mobile clinic arrived. They knew how valuable SPANA’s treatment had been to friends and neighbours in the village. This time Lotfi knew that his horse, Buna, just needed a check-up.

Buna is always accompanied by her young foal, Fata, who will help her mother when she’s older. Buna transports water for Lotfi’s family, and helps to bring their cows to graze on the pasture.

After tending to the more serious cases, the SPANA vets gave Buna and Fata a check-up. They inspected their heart rates and checked that their eyes were bright and clear, their ears were positioned correctly, and their noses were clean and breathing steadily. Their teeth were inspected, as were their feet, to check for any foreign objects, hoof damage or other abnormalities.

While the animals were being tended to, Maram and other village children studied the education poster that the vet team had brought.

Maram said: ‘I learned how to look after our horses by reading the educational sign, so they can live longer and healthier.’

SPANA’s mobile clinic is vital in reaching working animals in the most rural and poverty-stricken parts of Tunisia. Maintaining the health of animals such as Buna and Fata enables communities around the world to support themselves.
