How SPANA vets treated Kawkab the donkey’s lameness

Find out how SPANA vets in Morocco helped a donkey suffering from lameness to walk again.

A donkey suffering from lameness is examined by vets at a SPANA centre in Casablanca

Kawkab is a senior donkey from Casablanca, in Morocco. Until recently, the donkey had been used to carry food waste.

Sadly, when Kawkab became lame, he was abandoned by his owner, so the donkey was brought to SPANA’s veterinary centre in Casablanca by a concerned member of the public. Kawkab, estimated to be over 20 years old, was lame and had an unusual gait.

Our vets examined Kawkab’s legs and hooves thoroughly and diagnosed him with contracted tendons, a painful condition that causes tendons to stiffen. This was the result of overgrown hooves due to irregular farriery. Kawkab was also suffering from a club foot.

Kawkab was administered painkillers to ease him of any pain and discomfort. Next, our skilled farrier trimmed Kawkab’s hooves to correct the overgrowth and ensure they were all well-balanced and even. The farrier then fitted Kawkab with metal shoes that had a toe extension. These shoes would encourage proper hoof placement when Kawkab walked.

Kawkab was admitted to SPANA’s stables and was monitored closely throughout his stay. The donkey will remain at the centre until he is placed with a suitable owner.

Your continued support is transforming the lives of working animals like Kawkab worldwide. Thanks to you, our vets and farriers can provide regular treatment to working animals to ensure their hooves are healthy and comfortable. We’re also training owners about the importance of farriery care and empowering them with the knowledge they need to recognise if their animal’s hooves require treatment. And we’re training local farriers and other veterinary professionals in hoof care so they can reach even more working animals in need. Thank you so much for caring for sick and injured working animals.
