Issam carries out agricultural work for his owner, Nejib, who is a farmer. The horse’s dedicated work enables Nejib to support his wife and two children.

Nejib became very worried for his 16-year-old horse when Issam developed a painful wound on the side of his mouth. He decided to take Issam to SPANA’s mobile clinic when it visited their rural village near the town of Sbeitla, in central Tunisia.

At the clinic, SPANA’s veterinary team examined Issam’s wound. They explained to Nejib that the wound had been caused by Issam’s bit. The bit had been fitted incorrectly and had rubbed against the side of his mouth. The vets cleaned the wound, then gave Nejib thorough guidance on Issam’s after-care. This included advice on how to keep the wound clean during the healing process, to ensure he didn’t wear a bit until his wound had healed, and how to fit Issam’s bit properly so that it was safe and comfortable in future.

The vets were also concerned about Issam’s general health, as they spotted he had slightly laboured breathing. They gave him a full check-up, which included examining his teeth and eyes, and checking his lungs and heart rate with a stethoscope. The vets diagnosed Issam as suffering from a mild inflammation of his airways. The vets started Issam on a course of anti-inflammatory medication and showed Nejib how to continue the treatment at home. Nejib was advised to ensure Issam had plenty of rest and to keep his shelter clean and dust-free.
